Can Weighing Too Little Bring On COPD Risk?

It makes sense that being overweight could
raise your risk for chronic lung disease, but what if you weigh too little? I’m Rachelle
Grossman with your latest health news. A new study finds that chronic obstructive pulmonary
disease, or COPD, is more likely associated with being severely obese as well as being
underweight. The study looked at people over a 10 year period and found those with excessive
abdominal fat are more likely to develop COPD along with those underweight. However, moderately
overweight people did not have an increased risk. Researchers think this may be because
underweight people have higher rates of malnutrition and reduced muscle mass. Physical activity
lowered a person’s COPD chances. Work with a dietitian to maintain healthy weight.
